In the UK, individuals diagnosed with epilepsy must meet certain criteria to be eligible for driving. These criteria include seizure-free periods and medical reports from healthcare professionals.

What should individuals with epilepsy consider before driving?

Before getting behind the wheel, individuals with epilepsy should consult their healthcare providers regarding their seizure control, medication side effects, and any legal requirements for driving.

YOU MUST INFORM THE DVLA OF YOUR CONDITION AND KEEP THEM UP TO DATE OF ANY AND ALL SEIZURES THIS INCLUDES SEIZURES FROM SLEEP. FOR GROUP 1 (CAR AND MOTORBIKE) LICENSES IF YOU DO REPORT A SEIZURE YOUR LICENSE WILL BE TAKEN AWAY PENDING REVIEW BUT THIS IS FOR YOUR SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS SO PLEASE REPORT YOUR SEIZURES IF YOU HAVE YOUR LICENSE. THE REVIEW STAGE IS USUALLY 6

MONTHS SO FROM THE TIME OF A REPORTED SEIZURE IF YOU GO 6 MONTHS WITHOUT ANOTHER YOU CAN REAPPLY FOR YOUR LICENSE. GROUP 2 (BUS, COACH AND LORRY) LICENSES ARE DIFFERENT AND IT IS USUALLY BETWEEN 5-10 YEARS WITHOUT A SEIZURE AND YOU CANT BE ON ANY ANTI- EPILEPTIC MEDICATION WITHIN THAT TIME AND THEN YOU CAN REAPPLY.
